Why Layer

Layering gives you the ability to select a mix of garments that are appropriate for anticipated weather conditions, your expected activity levels, and your metabolism.

Outdoor temperatures can often change by more than 10 degrees C on a given day, and because your activity level also varies considerably, you need high performing layers and flexibility in your layering system to be comfortable, dry, and perform at your best.

The Terramar baselayer range gives you the ability to select technical layers and accessories that suit the time of the year, conditions and your activity levels—you can then make small adjustments on the day by adding or removing accessories, closing or opening zips for ventilation, or adding or removing an outer layer to adjust your bodies micro climate as the day and your body cools or warms.

The Base Layer

The base layer is your most important layer—this is worn next to your skin to help regulate your body temperature and transport moisture away from your body; to keep you dry and comfortable. Base layer garments follow a progression from light to heavier weight, and you select accordingly to suit anticipated temperatures, activity level, and your metabolism.

The base layer that is right for you on the day, will fit comfortably, feel comfortable against your skin, manage moisture, and support a comfortable microclimate around the body. For the good part of Spring, Summer, and Autumn, in temperate to warm areas, a sun UV protective Terra Tee,( UPF 25 + rating … meaning only 1/25th of UV rays passed through the fabric when tested) may be all you need on your top half for your activity. Good preparation would of course have another layer like the Geofleece on standby, to put over your base when you cool down, and an appropriate outer protective shell if a change in the weather is imminent.

If you are wanting very light weight travel, lifestyle, & work comfort, it is hard to go past the Thermasilk 100% natural silk, range of fine Womens & Mens tops, long pants, sock liners & glove liners. .

When the conditions get colder, you can of course scale up to a multi layer system with Helix base layer or the progressively heavier weight high performing Thermolator II, and Geofleece range to provide increased base layer insulation as appropriate.

The Mid Layer

This layer will provide you with additional thermal insulation and it should aid the transportation of moisture from your base layer to your outer layer. Select the mid layer weight accordingly to suit anticipated temperatures, activity level, and your metabolism. This layer may often serve as your outer layer when your activity level and weather conditions suit a simple 2 layer system.

The versatile Geo Fleece ½ zip can be worn as a mid layer under your shell in cold or inclement weather as an outer garment over your base layer of choice on cool days, and of course it can be used as a warm high performing base layer if needs dictate.

The Outer Shell

This is the outer garment you would put on for barrier protection from the effects of wind or cold air movement, rain, water spray, or snow. This layer may add significant thermal insulation, and it should aid transportation of generated moisture to the outside air. As you warm up and conditions improve you have the choice of removing this layer or your mid layer where appropriate to suit your needs.

Base Layer Fabrics

Silk has a luxurious feel next to the skin - it is a natural and renewable insulator, with the highest weight to warmth ratio of any fibre-natural or synthetic.

Micro polyester fabrics dry fast and have good moisture removal properties that are hard to match with any other fabric – natural or man-made.

Body Sensors... Body-Sensors ec2® Qwik-Dri™ micro polyester fabrics in the Helix, Thermolator II and Geo Fleece line-up, work with your body’s natural heating and cooling system to promote rapid evaporation while providing effective insulation.

An essential and versatile layering piece for outdoor activities.

"For the past few days, the sun and clear skies have disappeared. Replaced by clouds, icy fogs and a biting wind, conditions have been somewhat unpleasant as of late. You know it's bad when you have to huddle behind ice blocks for warmth and to block the wind. The wind got to be intense enough that I had to put on my Terramar Geofleece"- Eric Larsen, Polar Explorer

ec2® fabrics utilize electrostatic evaporation, not wicking, so they release excessive heat and moisture constantly across the entire surface of the fabric.

Nothing should get in the way of you and your outdoor experience. Not even sweat. Thanks to our innovative ec2® Qwik-Dri fabric, designed to pull moisture from your body, you’ll stay dry even during your most extreme outdoor days. ec2® Qwik-Dri technology is an electrostatic process that permanently modifies fiber to improve its ability to move and release moisture. The ec2® Qwik-Dri fabrics respond to your body’s need to get rid of excess heat and moisture by accelerating the process of evaporation and keeping you dry, warm and comfortable.

Wicking fabrics only release excessive heat and moisture where there is skin contact with the fabric.
